Magpied the Proper way...Whey Aye!

St. James, has called Ryan by his first name ever since we landed on this Northern Rock.  Taunting him, Saturday after Saturday, even Sundays too!  Metros packed with magpies of all ages, swamped together  making their way to the Haymarket to visit the Toon loving pub, known as, The Goose.
Ryan’s eyes would resemble a child in a candy shop, as he watched the black and white clad Geordies trudge their way down Northumberland Street.

“Why can’t it be me?”  Ryan would constantly ask himself.

“I want to be a part of the ‘Toon Army’, and witness the rituals that happen behind the walls of St James’ Park”.

“I want to sing their songs, belt out their chants, and drink their pints!!!!”

Okay okay, Ryan!!! We hear you; I will consult with our tour guide, ‘Sir Daniel Alecks’ and see what we can do.

We finally did it!  It only took us 8 months, but we made our way to a NUFC match!

Visiting St. James Park and partaking in the chanting, singing, and pint drinking was all I could have imagined it to be.  Don’t just take my written word for it; take a look at these classic videos to witness the Geordified mob that we stood in, on Easter Monday 2012.

Grandpa Norman also made it to Newcastle this Easter.  Here he is cheering on the Toon army.  He was so excited about the goals that day, that he turned around and embraced me after each one!  Thank goodness there were only 2 goals that day!  Because hugging Geordie strangers is not how I pictured spending my visit to St. James Park.

Wait for it, but you will spot him, he is the quiet one sitting directly in front of me.  Also, those chants you hear are in actual English...

We have also been extremely busy with other activities as well!  Such activities include, TRYING TO LOCATE EASTER EGG DYE!!!!

Easter in Newcastle = no peeps, no Mr. Solid, no Mr. Nutty, no Easter bunny to sit on in the mall, and no Easter egg dye!!! Errrrrrrrr.......

I am missing our commercialized country, especially for the PEEPS!

Peter Cotton Tail came by, and hand delivered Anne her ears!  Or he gave me ten quid to do it for him.

No egg dye, no problem.  I brought out my crayons and felt tips!

Anne made deviled eggs for Easter Sunday breakfast, not only were they disguised as baby chick faces, they tasted amazing too!

More evidence that there is an Easter Bunny!!!

Oh, and did you hear?  I have, since moving to Newcastle, turned into a witch look alike.  This is fitting too, because I have been involved with photo shoots for our engagement photos.  Somehow my nose has found my chin, and physically they have decided to meet one another.

Once again the photography is amazing, due to ‘Sir Alecks’ talents, yet my face has decided to turn into a horrific sight, ruining half of our photos.

This one is beautiful, only because you can't see my face! haha...

Still okay, because again, my nose is not insight!

WHHHHHAT!!!!!!!! WHO IS THAT WITCH WITH MY FIANCEE???

I am not even going to get into the hair, or the fact that a ginger is more tanned than I am??!!!

Here is a Wednesday camera photo dump. Enjoy......HAPPY WEDNESDAY!

The way British men sit.

The way American men sit.

This is what I will miss.... random ruins and castles all over the place!

Ryan's British pose.  With the background here, Ryan fits in with his 'vest'.

bluffs and castles, no biggy...

Ryan's photography skills...

5 seconds after I asked Ryan to help me with wedding invites.

Haymarket metro on Match day!!!

You are allowed to bring your children into the pub with you while you get shit faced, but they must then leave by 7pm.

Say WHAT!?

Beautiful Anne, some Geordie guy, and RY...

This one is for mom.  I thought of you when I seen this.  I asked the barmaid, "What does the Mars machine do?"  She had no idea what I was asking her...

Look the Fleur De Lis!  Too bad this is on an outdoor toilet!

Outdoor toilet, found in the BiGg MaRkEt Newcastle.

The Curry Hell Challenge the boys took during dinner.  The curry won.

Curry Hell!

My sensible option.
Until next time, keep fit and have fun!

Home again, home again Jiggity Jig!

Our journey is winding down, and it is quite remarkable, because it feels as if we have just landed.  We had little to almost no time to catch our breath, and live in the small moments.  It has been such a whirl-win that we have not, unfortunately been able to, ‘enjoy the small things’.

Nicci, had said it best, she said, “I don’t think it will ever feel like home.”  After I had confided in her that I am still yearning to feel settled.

As I reflect now, Ryan and I have never really felt, or been for that matter, settled.  I am not complaining, not one bit.  Even during ‘uni’ we moved every single August.  We work best that way. We have learned how to pack up our lives in less than an hour, using only 1 suitcase each.

The thing is we have settled things; we have stuff that belongs in a home, a settled home.  We just don’t know how to settle down.  We have art even, art that is supposed to hang over our mantle.  The art has sat in Diddo’s and Nancy’s attic for about 5 years now.  We have towels, linens, appliances, countless knife sets, but nowhere to share them.

I cannot wait to have our first settled place, believe me I am hosting Christmas when this happens, but  it just may not be tomorrow, or even next year.  Patience is something that Ryan has taught me.  Although not all of you may agree that I have this virtue, not even Ryan, but I know I have learned this trait from him, because although he has these Christmas hosting dreams as well, there are other dreams, bigger dreams that we both, together want to accomplish first.  Unfortunately, these dreams and accomplishments take time, and PATIENCE thus is why settling is far from a grasp, it is more like a glimpse in the future, a sliver of hope that one day might be near.

Until then there may be other journeys for us to take.  New countries may be on our radar, or maybe just new provinces, nevertheless we have learned a fabulous lesson.  This lesson is, ‘we are not defined by where we live’.  Nicci, again, has helped me with this one.  Where you live should not define you.  I continue to understand this more and more each and every day.

Naturally, when I share my woes with family and friends their first reactions are to, ‘come home’.  What is difficult about this statement is, ‘where’s home?’  To them, it is Windsor, a place I have lived in for 9 months during the past 6 years.  Yes of course my love is there, Ryan’s too.  We love Windsor; we love it for the fact that we both feel comfy there.  Ryan loves visiting his old roots, and together every time we roll into Windsor, Walker road seems a bit more chaotic, more modern, more sub-divisions, more restaurants, banks, box stores.  Something else trickles down our spines, unfamiliarity.  Although family and friends are the first things we think of when we ride by Montanas and Staples it can also be the same thing we think of once we hit the 115 and the tapley quarter line.

Meaning for us home is in many places.  We are blessed to have so many places to call home.
Mary Ann said something tonight that triggered this rant.  We were telling her about our trips ‘home’ and she asked me, ‘are you flying into Toronto, or Windsor?’  There it is... where is home?  Or which home are you flying to?

Well one day Ryan and I will have our ‘own home’, a place that we will always be ‘flying into’, but until then we have our gracious families and friends who welcome us into ‘their homes’, and make us feel, ‘at home’.

Now that I have gotten out all the philosophical stuff, here is a video to lighten the mood.

Anne made a fantastic apple cake.  Here I didn't realize our camera was on record until Ryan gives a funky half smile! haha... Then I wanted to pay respects to the baker, and she shunned me!

We have been POORLY.

Tissues, paracetamol, and cough lollies have lined our night tables this past week.  Ryan and I have been sick, and it has been really poopy, because the weather has been absolutely gorgeous!

I believe I brought something home with me from school.  My students this week were all itchy and snotty nosed (YUCK!!) and I crashed Saturday night around 7pm and didn’t wake until morning!!!  I woke up feeling even yuckier, but to my surprise was Mr. Aschaber!  He never gets sick, or tells anyone that he is.  He came in to the sick infested room and announced, “I’m sick!”  We both felt like absolute rubbish!  Even so, that Ryan did something that I have NEVER EVER seen him do! CALLED IN SICK!!!!! Oh my goodness!

It was quite funny actually.  He was extremely anxious about it.  I left the house to go and visit with Nicci, because I began feeling better.  I took the phone, and he was all, “If they call, let them know that you are not home, and don’t know where I am blah blah blah..... hahahaha!!”

Because of the beautiful weather, Nicci and I had our therapy session outdoors.  It really did make me feel better!  Having the sun shine on my cheeks brightened me up.  I thought this remedy would be equally as good for Ryan.  Therefore I raced home and changed into some shorts, and asked Ryan to do the same.  He tried, but banked on a hoodie instead.  He was still having the chills so entered the 20 plus temperatures wearing a black hoodie.  It was again pretty funny to see Ryan walking all white and sickly among the others around us, who were shirtless and tanned and running around!

We made it to an outdoor cafe, where I wished I had a camera because Ryan looked like death sitting there in the sun looking like he could use a sofa or bed to lie on!

My next thought is this, supply can’t call in sick.  We are supplying for the sick, therefore I taught this week feeling a wee bit ‘high’.  I rather not have to re-visit this state anytime soon.  Teaching 7 year olds algebra for the first time while consistently blowing my nose is not a particular good thing, much confusion for my sweet pea little year 2 students.

Friday, Ryan and I had to escape the flat!  Being sick all this week, made us MAD!  Working and sleeping is all we did, therefore Friday we flew the coop. Before we left, I thought I looked not bad, after reviewing these photos, I think we should have just stayed in bed!

Enjoy!

Greggs, is the England Tims.  Even before we hit the metro, Ryan is in search of sausage rolls.  We should have realized then that it was bed time.

Quayside.  The Pitcher and Piano packed, and it was only noon on a Friday!

Well it was packed outside at least, but these sicklings decided that the sun was to bright, and opted for an indoor seat!

Our liquid lunch.  Mine a coke, have given up alcohol for lent.

Ryan trying to look like he is feeling well.

Looking sickly.

This picture makes me laugh soo much!  We should have not left the house.

I was excited about not wearing socks or tights in this beautiful weather!
 Until next time...

Lily Dawn

When are you going to start trying?
Are you two going to start right away?
Are you talking about kids soon?

Comes from my female friends, and mothers.

Children, if Ryan and I can help it are ways away... But we are lucky enough to have our very first God- child together.  Miss Lily Dawn is our ray of sunshine, and we want to spoil her first before we add any other children into the mix, it’s only fair isn’t it?

Ryan and I cannot wait to return to Canada, for the obvious reasons, but most importantly to welcome our baby Lily into a spiritual world.  Together we are excited to help raise the most beautiful little girl with the two most precious parents, Rebecca and Dave.

Lily, hang on tight my love!  We are coming!!! We are coming with much love, hugs and snuggles. We promise you that we will forever love you.

Love Always,

Ryan and Amanda xxx

I am the ODD one as well...

It was grade 4, Mrs. Johnson in the first cubicle behind St, Christopher’s School (the old school, the one that no longer exist).  It was there that we were asked to draw our dream house.  We were able to design a house using our imaginations.  We could include anything we wanted, any type of room or furniture desirable.  We were 9 years old.  As I look back on this embedded memory of good old St. Christopher’s I can see that Alex was not the only odd ball child of the family, I ranked up there as well.

I remember thinking, how joyous this assignment was going to be, as did the rest of my classmates.  I remember hearing the buzz of excitement around me while Mrs. Johnson distributed the manila landscaped papers, “I’m going to have a water slide that starts at my bed and goes all the way to the pool outside!” shouted Marco.  “Well mine is going to be bigger than yours!” exclaimed Christine.  My excitement was a little different.  I remember being excited to include vaulted ceilings and natural hardwood floors to my dream house, I hadn’t thought of the size or of any outrageous waterslide ideas.

It’s wild, but all I was excited about was sketching my house.  I was excited to use the handy symbols for doors and windows, that dad had taught me.  I couldn’t wait to put my skills to work!

Anyway as my classmates erupted with excitement and started to fill their empty pages with colourful outrageous elements, that no real house could accommodate, I took out my ruler and pencil and began scalping a rather decent regular house.

Prior to this lesson, our family friends had just recently bought a new home.  It was Dave and Sue, they had bought a beautiful newly built home right behind the school.  At that time it was probably one of the nicest homes I have ever been into.  I decided then, that this was my dream house, and I went on to sketch a very similar model to their house on my page.  My furniture, yet beautiful was practical.  My rooms had sky lights, not swimming pools, and my yard had a garden, not an amusement park.

This is my first ever memory of my love for architecture.  Other things come to mind, such as, always adoring Brie’s Victorian set house found just off of Riverside Drive in Windsor.  I remember the rest of my friends excited to go to Brie’s parties to well, party.  I was more excited to get a glimpse of the original re-furbished stair case, or the cute little powder room situated in the living room.  Yes so there it is, I am just as odd as Mr. Alex Washbrook.

Anyway, I have been thinking about my odd obsession with architecture lately, for a few reasons.  Firstly, anyone will agree with me when I say, England has a distinctive architectural element.  Their houses are all extremely, if not totally, the same.  On arriving here, the first thing Ryan and I commented on was the similarity to all the homes.  I remember the train ride into Newcastle from London.  I looked over groggy eyed from the 30+ hours of travel, and asked Ryan, “So, what do you think of England so far?”  And he answered “Well for miles now, all I have seen is red brick homes with clay shingled roofs”.  That is what we continued to see for the 4 hour train ride, well mixed with the odd field that housed sheep by the hundreds of course.

Once we settled in our house in Newcastle upon Tyne, I began to realize that it was not in-fact our imaginations.  All the houses in England have a similar if not exactly the same look.  The only way that a house in England can define itself, Ryan and I have come up with, is through the colour of the door.
I captured this photo so you get the idea of how similar the houses are to one another.

Don't be fooled, this is not the same street as the photo above!! This is a different street.  Do you see the difference??? Neither do we.

Therefor the hunt begins, what colour door would you prefer to make your house different?

Green door?

French Door?

Red Door, Black Door?

Lime Door?

Oh and my other obsession, name your home.  Instead of a number address many name their houses.  When filling out profiles for the bank or bills, they don't even ask for your address, they ask for your 'House Name'.

If I lived on this street, I could see myself walking into the wrong house!

Yellow Door Perhaps???

Not only has it been the similar houses that have got me thinking about architecture, oh no, it’s been a few other oddities.

Yesterday, Ryan and I went to the Hancock museum.  It was a great afternoon date, to learn more about Hadrian’s Wall and Ryan loved seeing the irregular sea-life come alive.  But, to tell you the truth I was more interested in the building itself.  I was marvelling over the original floor boards and the vaulted ceiling and the re-finished beams, to even notice half the time that we were in a museum! Ohhh geezzz... what an odd ball.

A few other date nights that Ryan and I have been able to enjoy lately includes our visit to the Tyneside Cinema.  Here in Newcastle, the Tyneside is much desired by the locals.  If you talk with a Geordie long enough, they will ask you, “Have you been to the Tyneside yet?”

With all this hype we decided we needed to take in the Tyneside Cinema, so we ventured out and visited the Tyneside to view ‘The Artist’.

The Tyneside is like no other modern day Cineplex.  It reveals an old fashion theatre with the old red velvet seats, and curtain screens.  Also it has a 1920’s art deco feel throughout the cinema.  It has a theatre space called, ‘The Circle’.  In the circle the seats are like Minnie couches and you are in a private area with your group.  We did not sit in the circle because it was just the 2 of us, but I for sure wish to do this in the future.

You are able to drink alcohol in this theatre, which mad Ryan happy.  I on the other hand have given up alcoholic beverages for lent.  To my surprise though, the Tyneside is home to not only a swanky art deco restaurant but a lovely cafe as well, so as Ryan found happiness in ciders and beer, I found in my mint latte.
A Glimpse of the Tyneside.

Inside, I made Ryan pose next to all the old equipment.  He never seems impressed with me when I ask him to pose.

The art Deco feel.

In the Cafe.

At the bar.
Gorgeous!

Here are some other fun photos of the week.

I thought I found Kraft Dinner!... In a can.... oh well can't be that bad, or can it be?

Epic FAIL!!!!!!!! Oh it was bad!

Our Let sign is up!  Come let our place !! We are Canada Bound!!

Spring!

More name's of houses.

Ryan made a wonderful spaghetti dinner.  The only thing is that it could have fed 8 people, so we have been eating for the last 4 days straight.

This is the next night! haha.... I still love him and love what he does while he is in the kitchen alone for an hour! YUM!!

Spring... On British Mother's day at the Hancock.

The biggest hot-chocolate

And would you like a massive amount of cream and marshmellows with that? WHY YESS PLEASE!!
